Yu Nagaba (長場雄)
Yu Nagaba is a Japanese illustrator celebrated for his hand-drawn, slightly imperfect line portraits of iconic figures from pop culture. His warm, gentle drawing style captures personality in a few deliberate strokes.
Background
Nagaba graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts and began illustrating for magazines and advertising. His breakthrough came with his distinctive portrait style — minimal lines that somehow capture the exact essence of his subject. He has illustrated everyone from Steve Jobs and Kurt Cobain to Audrey Hepburn and David Bowie, and collaborated globally with brands like Nike, Apple, and Coach.
Style & Approach
Single continuous line work with intentional 'mistakes' — the slight wobble in the line is the signature. Where Noritake is pure minimalism, Nagaba injects warmth and a touch of nostalgia. His subjects are instantly recognisable despite being drawn in just a dozen lines. He often works on brown kraft paper or aged-looking backgrounds, adding a vintage, tactile quality.
