Japan — Tokyo (b. 1962)
Painting Sculpture Superflat Fashion Collaboration

Takashi Murakami is the founder of the Superflat movement and Japan's most internationally visible contemporary artist. His colourful, anime-inspired flower motifs and fusion of high art with otaku culture have made him a global brand in his own right.

Background

Murakami earned a PhD from Tokyo University of the Arts, studying Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting). He coined the term 'Superflat' in 2000 to describe his flattening of high and low culture — merging traditional Japanese scroll painting techniques with anime, manga, and otaku aesthetics. His studio, Kaikai Kiki, became a production powerhouse. He has collaborated with Louis Vuitton (multibillion-dollar handbag collection), Kanye West, Supreme, and countless others.

Style & Approach

Glossy, flat, hyper-colourful. Murakami's signature flowers — smiling daisies with sharp teeth — are immediately recognisable worldwide. His Mr. DOB character (a Mickey Mouse-like creature) appears throughout his work. He often references traditional Japanese art themes (dragons, waves, gods) rendered in Superflat pop style. His scale ranges from tiny prints to massive 100-metre paintings.

Why Collectors Care

Murakami is a market unto himself. His limited edition prints hold strong value, his skate decks are collectible, and his exhibition posters from major museum shows are sought after. The rainbow flower motif in particular has become a cultural symbol — instantly recognisable even to people who don't follow contemporary art.

From TOWHOM's Shelf

Murakami flower prints are a staple of any Japan-culture select shop. If TOWHOM has any Murakami piece — even a print or poster — it's a major display item. The flowers are universally loved and photograph well for social media.
